About
"To burn always with this hard gemlike flame, to maintain this ecstacy, is succes in life", Walter Pater 1873
Hi and welcome, my name is Gugge (named after Guggenheim museum, yes indeed) and I am a full time artist.
I grew up in a family of artists in Denmark and have always painted or expressed myself through art in some way or another.
I hold a master's degree in English literature and art history from Copenhagen university. I combined these two subjects in my final year a did a thesis on the English Pre-Raphaelite Dante Gabriel Rossetti, who excelled in both painting and poetry. You might notice how I often get inspiration from literature, poetry and other artists' depictions of the female form.
As long as I can remember, I have always had an obsession with everything English and I moved to London when I was 18 years old. I moved back to Copenhagen, Denmark, to do my degree but ended up back in London for 8 years in my 30s but also lived in Leeds, Zurich,Vienna and the South of England for 16 years. I have done several art courses at Central St. Martin School of Art, London, St Andrews School of Art and The New School of Art, London.
My ceramic adventure started 5 years ago, where I worked and learned to throw and hand build at the Paddock Art Studio, Lewes, UK. I tend to do both ceramics and painting every day and I love how the two art forms often inspire and inform one another. The colours are similar and the subject often the female form in an expressive, flamboyant style, flowers or dots; two impulses coming from the same source and an intensely active imagination.
